1994 ROM Gallery
It was not till 1992 that could I begin painting for my 1994 D’Stilled show at ROM after my 1985 COURTENAY exhibition. Leaving Art Teaching to set up my mural company meant the experience of working on a large range of decorative mural commissions had honed my painting skills. Finishing a large ceiling mural a montage of 17th century Dutch flower and fruit still life painting inspired me to start painting on black stucco the beginning of my exhibition at ROM 3 – 21 August 1994.
“ These paintings are a re-interpretation of traditional still-life painting into works that are both personal explorations of self and comments on modern society. They are about beauty, sensual energy, decoration, pain and the classification of women. I have painted the jewellery I wear, objects I have collected and arranged them with fruit and flowers.
All still life painting involves a love of beauty encapsulating the moment in which the objects painted are their most desirable. Behind this awareness is the rotting of fruit and flesh, death, pain, vulnerability, gender and class.
