Gabrielle Courtenay’s latest exhibition of evocative oil painting SHIFT represents a shift in focus from stylized flower paintings to abstracted studies of form, energy and color. The painterly qualities of formal composition and skilled application of subtle layers of glazing are further developed from earlier shows.
Under her gaze, Courtenay’s subject matter the rose is redefined in many ways. Perpetually used as shorthand for beauty, the rose will always exercise its hold over artists and lovers under her gaze Courtenay further interrogates the dynamic energy of its unfolding form.
